Ok - so I did a gig last inght and used one of my lovely a'kai veils. Now I can't get the bar smell out of it. No sunshine here (too smokey from the fires in GA and FL) so I don't want to hang it outside. Any suggestions ladies?

Or hang it in the bathroom while you shower.

Sat, June 2, 2007 - 6:01 PMWhy not just a gentle washing? I've hand washed my silks before and they come out fine. Just have to break out the iron though :o( or they will be super-wrinkly. -

Sat, June 2, 2007 - 6:31 PMAnd don't freak-out if excess dye leaks in the water :). Just have to be veeeeery careful not to stain the lighter parts. -

Re: Oh No! Bar Smells!
Sat, June 2, 2007 - 9:17 PMI've never had any issues with colors bleeding. I use cold water and a teeny amount of detergent in the water. Swish it around a little bit then rinse. I started followig up with a 2nd rinse with a little Downy in the water. It seems to help with static.

Re: Oh No! Bar Smells!
Sun, June 3, 2007 - 8:49 AMAs soon as I have the energy to shower, I'll start by trying that one. I used the good ol' vodka and water spritz on my costumes, but was scared to try it on the silk.

Mon, June 4, 2007 - 2:31 PMTry putting it in the dryer on air dry (no heat) with a scented dryer sheet. That usually works for mine. -

Re: Oh No! Bar Smells!
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 9:59 AMI thought you weren't supposed to use dryer sheets with silk veils, because they could leave oily stains. I don't remember where I heard this, though. Its sounds like you've already proven it wrong. ;-) -

Re: Oh No! Bar Smells!
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 11:18 AMI find they can leave a greasy film under my fingers when I use the veil afterwards.
If I absolutely need to use some, I'll use old sheets that have been used once or twice and are all wrinkly :). Just enough left in them but not too much that you'll smell your fingers for weeks afterwards :)

Re: Oh No! Bar Smells!
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 4:24 PMHmmmm, I've never noticed any oil stains. I also use dryer sheets on vintiage silk saris ... I know, I'm a bad bad person. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I use the unscented "natural" dryer sheets. I guess I should go check all my dry sheet accosted silk for stains. It could be that I'm just unobservant.

Re: Oh No! Bar Smells!
Sat, December 29, 2007 - 10:25 AMno, no, no! don't use a dryer sheet! sorry, but silk is an organic and very delicate material and over time will break down! dryer sheets cause this to happen faster! rinse it in cold water in your sink and hand dry in your shower. a nice scented candle or incense in the bathroom will help!

Re: Oh No! Bar Smells!
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 6:40 PMI'm allergic to dryer sheets -- but I might try a bit of fabric soaked in vodka as a substitute. (Not good vodka, of course...) -

Sun, December 30, 2007 - 12:22 AMPerhaps frebreeze? It does seem to work with my costume bra since it can't be washed. It eliminates all odors.
